The Ultimate 1-Week Maui Itinerary for a Relaxing Trip

Planning a trip to Maui and wondering how to spend your days? This relaxed 5-7 day Maui itinerary blends beach time, light adventure, and some of the island’s most memorable experiences. From sunrise at Haleakalā to snorkeling calm reefs and enjoying great local food. Whether it’s your first visit or a return trip, this guide will help you balance exploring with time to slow down and truly enjoy Maui.

Maui Itinerary Overview

  • Trip Length: 5–7 Days
  • Pace: Relaxed with light adventure
  • Best For: First-time visitors, couples, and balanced trips
  • Where to Stay: Kihei or Wailea (central & sunny)
  • Highlights: Haleakalā sunrise, snorkeling, beach days, West Maui, great local food

Where to Stay

We usually stay in Kihei because of its central location and easy beach access. On our last trip, we stayed in a beachfront Airbnb in North Kihei, which made morning beach walks and sunset views effortless. You can browse similar Kihei stays here.

We typically stay in South Maui for its convenient location, beautiful beaches, and easy access to restaurants and activities. Grand Champions in Wailea offers spacious, comfortable condos in a great area — within walking distance to shops, dining, and just a short drive to some of the best beaches nearby.

Maui Banyan is another solid option in a very convenient location. While the rooms felt a bit dated, it’s hard to beat the easy walk to restaurants, cafes, and Kamaole Beach, making it a great practical home base for exploring South Maui.

For our next trip, we’re planning to stay at the AC Hotel by Marriott Maui Wailea, a beautiful, modern property in Wailea located near Ulua Beach. The location, design, and overall atmosphere make it a great option if you’re looking for something more elevated while still being close to beaches and dining.

Trip Planning Tips

  • Rent a car — Maui is easiest to explore by driving
  • Book Haleakalā sunrise early if it’s on your list
  • Make restaurant reservations in advance for popular spots

Day 1 — Arrive & Ease Into Island Time

After landing, pick up your rental car, stop at Costco for any snacks or beach supplies, and settle into your stay in Kihei or Wailea. Both offer a great central base for exploring the island. Keep your first day simple and relaxed.

Head to Po‘olenalena Beach or Keawakapu Beach for soft sand, gentle waves, and a peaceful start to your trip. Stay for sunset — Maui sunsets never disappoint.

Where to eat:
  • Dinner: Monkeypod Kitchen (Wailea) — a great first-night spot, try the fish tacos or fresh catch.
  • Casual option: Paia Fish Market South Side (Kihei) — famous fish tacos and easy takeout if you’re tired from your travels.

Day 2 — Haleakalā Sunrise & Beach Afternoon

Since you’re likely still adjusting to the time change, this is the perfect morning to experience one of Maui’s most unforgettable moments — sunrise at Haleakalā National Park. Reservations are required, and it’s worth arriving early to watch the sky slowly light up above the clouds. Be sure to bring warm layers, as temperatures at the summit are much cooler than the coast.

On the drive back down, stop in Paia for breakfast at Paia Bay Coffee & Bar. A great spot for coffee, fresh breakfast plates, and a relaxed North Shore vibe. While in the area, be sure to stop at Maui’s Specialty Chocolates for some freshly made mochi, or a variety of milk and dark chocolate options.

After breakfast, head back to South Maui and spend a slow afternoon at the beach. Ulua Beach is perfect for easy snorkeling, while Makena Beach is great for long walks and relaxing in the sun.

Where to eat:
  • Breakfast / Brunch: Paia Bay Coffee & Bar — for good coffee, fresh breakfast plates, and a relaxed North Shore vibe.
  • Lunch: Foodland — still a little hungry after a late breakfast, stop and grab fresh poke, musubi, or easy beach snacks before heading back to South Maui for the afternoon.
  • Dinner: Da Kitchen — if you kept lunch light with snacks, enjoy a casual local-style dinner, a longtime favorite for hearty Hawaiian plate lunches.

Day 3 – Snorkel, Beach Time & Sunset Dinner

Start your morning at Ulua Beach, one of South Maui’s best and most beginner-friendly snorkeling spots. The earlier you arrive, the better, as mornings are typically calm, and this is when tropical fish and sea turtles are most active. If you need gear, stop by Snorkel Bob’s — they have multiple locations across the island, and you can even pick up equipment the afternoon before to save time.

After snorkeling, head to Makena Beach (Big Beach) for a slower, laid-back beach afternoon. On the way, grab coffee and pick up a few picnic essentials. This is a perfect spot to relax, swim, and enjoy Maui’s natural beauty.

After a relaxing afternoon at Makena Beach, treat yourself to a sweet local favorite at Ululani’s Hawaiian Shave Ice. Their finely shaved ice with tropical flavors is a refreshing way to cool off after the sun. A fun Maui experience for all ages.

For dinner, book a table at Gather on Maui (reservations recommended, especially around sunset). A few standout favorites: the Kung Pao Calamari and the Short Ribs—both are local favorites and a great way to end the day.

Optional: if snorkeling isn’t your thing, rent a stand-up paddleboard in Wailea or Kihei for a calm morning on the water.

Where to eat:
  • Breakfast: Akamai Coffee (Wailea or Kihei) — known for its smooth Maui-grown coffee. Perfect for a quick breakfast like a pastry or breakfast sandwhich.
  • Lunch: The Market at Wailea — pick up fresh sandwiches, poke, or salads and build a simple beach picnic to enjoy at Makena Beach.
  • Dinner: Gather on Maui — a relaxed open-air spot known for locally inspired dishes and sunset views.

Day 4 – Kaʻanapali Beach & West Maui

Spend the day exploring Kaʻanapali Beach, one of Maui’s most iconic stretches of sand, known for its clear water, soft golden sand, and great swimming conditions. On your way from South Maui, make a morning stop at Sugar Beach Bake Shop (Kihei) for a relaxed breakfast. You can’t miss their fresh pastries and malasadas are the perfect start to the day.

Once you arrive, take time to stroll along the beachfront path and explore Whalers Village, where you can shop, browse, or simply enjoy the ocean views.

On your way back to South Maui, stop at Star Noodle, a beloved Asian-fusion, family-style restaurant. If you prefer to dine closer to South Maui, Lineage is an excellent choice. Reservations are recommended for both as they’re quite popular and fill up quickly.

Where to eat:
  • Breakfast: Sugar Beach Bake Shop (Kihei) — a cozy local favorite known for fresh basked-pastries, malasadas, and great coffee.
  • Lunch: Leilani’s on the Beach (Ka’anapali) — located oceanfront in Whalers Village, it’s a great spot for a relaxed lunch with a view. Enjoy fresh Hawaiian-inspired dishes, seafood, and tropical drinks just steps from the sand.
  • Dinner (West Maui option): Star Noodle (Lahaina) — from handmade noodles to bold, flavorful small plates, everything on the menu is consistently incredible. Definitely come hungry and plan to share.
  • Dinner (back in South Maui): Lineage (Wailea) — an elevated yet relaxed spot that blends Asian and Hawaiian flavors beautifully and is the perfect way to wind down after a day exploring the west side.

Day 5 – Adventure Day & South Maui Beach Time

After a few relaxing beach days, this is the perfect time to experience a different side of Maui. Choose an adventure that fits your style. Maui has plenty to offer — ziplining through the jungle, horseback riding with scenic island views, hiking one of Maui’s beautiful trails, joining a guided snorkel tour, or trying a stand-up paddleboard tour. No matter what you choose, you can still enjoy some relaxing beach time back in Kihei for the afternoon.

If you’re craving a mix of fun and activity, here are a few standout ways to spend your adventure day:

  • Ziplining: Fly over lush Maui valleys with companies like Skyline Hawaii – Haleakalā or Ka’anapali Ziplines. Multiple lines, scenic views, and expert guides make for an unforgettable experience.
  • Horseback Riding: Ride through Upcountry Maui at Triple L Ranch or Circle M Ranch, enjoying sweeping mountain and ocean views.
  • Snorkeling Tours: Explore Molokini & Turtle Town on a guided catamaran tour. Calm mornings bring out the best marine life.
  • Small-Group Standup Paddleboard Tour: For a more intimate ocean experience, small-group SUP tours let you paddle at your own pace while spotting turtles, fish, and enjoying Maui’s calm waters.

After your activity, lunch will depend on where you are on the island. You can still squeeze in some afternoon beach time back in Kihei, making it a full, balanced day of activity and relaxation.

Where to eat:
  • Breakfast/ Brunch: Kihei Caffe — a longtime local favorite know or hearty island-style breakfast. Try the Loco Moco, a classic Hawaiian comfort dish and a great way to fuel up for your adventure.
  • Lunch: Paia Fish Market (Kihei or Paia) — a great choice for fresh, casual seafood and quick service.
  • Dinner: Miso Phat Sushi —  a reliable local favorite for fresh sushi rolls in a relaxed setting.

Optional Days 6 & 7 – Slow Maui / Extra Beach & Exploration

After a few busy days of beaches and adventures, these last two days are all about slowing down and enjoying the island at your own pace.

Start with a morning coffee from your favorite local spot. Then choose your vibe for the day: spend a lazy morning at Wailea Beach or Keawakapu Beach, or take a stroll and do some shopping at the Shops at Wailea. After, head up north to explore Paia midday while you stroll the town’s boutiques, art galleries and local shops. Treat yourself to a massage or wellness session for the ultimate relaxation.

Where to eat:
  • Breakfast: Akamai Coffee or Island Vintage Coffee (Wailea) — both offer fresh, locally inspired options for healthier breakfast choices. Perfect for a relaxed start to your slow Maui day.
  • Lunch: South Maui Fish Company — casual and delicious midday option that offers flavorful poke.
  • Dinner: Mama’s Fish House (Paia) if you can get a reservation, or Morimoto Maui (Wailea)— for a special evening, Mama’s Fish House offers classic island flavors with fresh seafood, while Morimoto Maui serves elevated Japanese cuisine with a modern twist. Both are standout options, so reservations are recommended.

The key is flexibility. Take the time to savor a quiet morning coffee by the ocean, linger over a sunset dinner, or simply wander and explore the island at your own pace.
